Harman’s Cheese & Country Store — Home of the “World’s Greatest” Cheddar Cheese

harmans-exterior

We caught up with Brenda Aldrich during the brief window between fall foliage season and the holiday season. While cooler temperatures mean fewer visitors walking through the door of Harman’s Cheese & Country Store in Sugar Hill, NH, the spirit of giving inspires Harman’s shoppers from around the world to order specialty aged cheese plus maple items online and over the phone.
“In the five to six weeks that lead up to New Year’s Day we will ship nearly 9,000 pounds of cheese,” said Aldrich. She and her mother, Maxine Aldrich own the store. They get a jump-start on the season by pre-gift wrapping 100 pints and 100 quarts of maple syrup “just to get ready.” With nearly one ton of cheese rolling out the door every week — in most cases accompanied by maple syrup, maple cream and maple candies — it will be a full-court press from now until 2017.
Located in picturesque Sugar Hill, Harman’s welcomes regional visitors who are taking part in activities including skiing, a spring Lupine Festival, and leaf-peeping; and they also meet travelers on once-in-a-lifetime trips from around the world. People buy maple products for themselves and to share. “Our customers especially love the Fuller’s Maple Candies,” explained Brenda. “The Fuller’s Maple Sugarhouse maple candy is hard to pass up. They make it using light-colored maple syrup so it’s very visually appealing.”

Fuller’s Maple Sugarhouse delivers to Harman’s Cheese & Country Store every Friday; their excellent customer service eases the burden on this owner-operated shop. “They treat me like family,” said Brenda, “Fuller’s Maple Sugarhouse has gone the extra mile for me on several occasions.”

harmans-cheese-imageBrenda and Maxine take an active role in community events which helps build a loyal local shopping base. Shoppers who could easily do all their food-shopping at the grocery store will make a point of shopping “hyper-locally” for cheese, maple syrup and other specialty items at Harman’s. Once your family develops a taste for aged, handmade cheese it’s a hard habit to kick, and they also feel loyal to a shop that gives back to local teams and events. Brenda and Maxine are always eager to share samples of new and exciting products, too. As one local shopper said, “They sell only the best; it’s always a ‘hit’ when I serve something from Harman’s.”

You can visit Harman’s Cheese & Country Store in person, just 7 minutes from I-93 (exit 38) and just over 20 miles from I-91 (exit 17); online at HarmansCheese.com or connect with them on Facebook.

A Destination for Outdoor Gear…and Pure Maple Products

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

LL Cote, a destination outdoor retailer located in the “skinny part of New Hampshire,” owns the intersection of US Routes 26 and 16 in Errol.  Serving visitors who are touring the Granite State’s Great North Woods and Maine’s Western Mountains, the store also draws outdoorsmen and women who travel as much as three hours to get quality gear and the expertise that comes from more than 30 years of experience.

Truly a family enterprise, the LL in LL Cote represents the founding couple, Louise and Luke. The next generation, a daughter and son, Kristina and Shawn now manage the day-to-day operations with their parents making guest appearance from time to time. LL Cote currently carries more than one millions SKUs (stock keeping units) from clothing to camping gear, housewares to hunting equipment and pure maple products from Fuller’s Sugarhouse.

Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple candy and syrup move quickly from the special maple display, which is located near the checkout counters. “Fuller’s products sell like crazy,” said Kristina. The best selling item is the maple sugar candy moose, not surprising since moose are a major attraction for visitors to the North Country.

Kristina greatly appreciates the level of attention Fuller’s Sugarhouse provides to their operation. “If anyone from Fuller’s is in the neighborhood, they will deliver our order in person, saving us shipping charges,” said Kristina.”Tourists love maple, and Fuller’s Sugarhouse is constantly on the re-order list.”

How to Use Maple Syrup in Your Holiday Baking

maple-syrup-baking-ingredientThis holiday season, sweeten up your baking recipes the natural way — with Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup and sugar. Maple adds another dimension of sweetness and distinctive flavor to any baked good.

Instead of granulated sugar, use maple syrup. Use 3Ž/4 cup of maple syrup for each cup of granulated sugar you are replacing. To compensate for the syrup’s added liquid, reduce other liquid ingredients by approximately 1/Ž4 cup.

Maple sugar can be substituted for regular sugar in the same amount.

Another great reason to use maple syrup is that it is a healthier alternative to sugar and other sweeteners. Maple syrup is lower in calories, high in healthful antioxidants, and includes essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and manganese.

Put Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup and sugar on your list of go-to holiday baking ingredients.

Long View Country Store:  A Lakes Region Fixture

longview-country-storeThe Long View Country Store, with a product line that includes everything from Fuller’s Sugarhouse maple syrup, candy and sugar to antique maple furniture, has been a Lakes Region fixture for 20 years. Named for the spectacular view of Lake Winnipesaukee that stretches from Meredith almost to Alton, the store’s Route 3 location is easy to get to and open all year.

Pat Simon has owned Long View Country Store for the past 13 years and happily serves local and visiting shoppers. “We see more local shoppers during the holiday season, and visitors to the region during the other times of year,” explained Simon, noting that these two groups both appreciate the quality and taste of Fuller’s Sugarhouse products.

“We sell the syrup in maple leaf bottles in both small and large bottles,” said Simon, “After they empty, people fill the leaf bottles with colored water and put the bottles in the window to catch the sunlight.” What a great way to remember the taste of Fuller’s maple syrup long after the last pancake has left the fork.

When you are in the Lakes Region, stop in and say hi to Pat and stock up on your Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple products.

Fuller’s Sugarhouse Expands its Family Maple Business

Fuller’s Sugarhouse is making progress on its Fuller Maple Farm project – an expansion that will further enhance its ability to produce the Best in New Hampshire – Best in World pure maple syrup and maple products.  Fuller’s Sugarhouse, a family-owned and operated business, is also pleased to announce that Jim Fuller, son of the owners Dave and Patti Fuller, has joined the operation to assist with the new expansion and carry on the Fuller family’s maple sugaring heritage.

fuller-family
Maple sugaring is a passion for the Fuller family. Shown here in front of Fuller’s Sugarhouse in Lancaster are (LtoR) Russell, Ed, James, and Dave.

The Fuller Maple Farm project includes the construction of a new 40×80 ft sugarhouse on Route 2 in Jefferson (NH) and one million feet of piping to transport sap directly from the maple trees to the sugarhouse for production. The new sugarhouse and sugar bush are located on a 723-acre parcel within the 10,000-plus-acre Randolph Community Forest. The sugarhouse construction is expected to be completed by the beginning of November.

New sugarhouse under construction
The sugarhouse will contain an evaporator and three climate-controlled tanks with a combined capacity of 18,000 gallons. “The sap will be piped directly into climate-controlled tanks inside of the new sugarhouse and not be exposed to air until production,” says owner Dave Fuller. “This gives us even more control over the final product and continue our ability to ensure food safety and quality.” Another advantage of having the sugarhouse in close proximity to the sugar bush is that visitors interested in learning how maple syrup is produced will see the entire maple syrup production process in one location. Fuller expects that this maple syrup production will increase the size of his current operation.

All the maple syrup produced from the Fuller Maple Farm will be packaged in the current Fuller’s Sugarhouse facility on 267 Main Street in Lancaster. The Country Store, which is part of the sugarhouse facility, will continue to sell Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple products, along with other quality products from the region.

Fuller was 17 years old when he started his first sugarhouse, a small shack in the woods with a mud floor and a used evaporator that cost him $300. Over the years, the business grew and Dave Fuller and his wife Patti established the sugarhouse and Country Store in downtown Lancaster to be more accessible to visitors. The Fuller Maple Farm is the next evolution for the Fullers. “It took a lifetime to get to this point,” said Dave. “This is truly a labor of love.”

Buy Local is Jiffy Mart’s Motto

“Buy local” is part of the Jiffy Mart mission, explained Whitefield Jiffy Mart manager Wanda Ingerson. Jiffy Mart, which operates stores that sell groceries, sundries, fuel and ready-to-eat food in New Hampshire and Vermont, emphasizes both community and convenience. In addition to familiar national brands, the stores offer local products, like Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup and candy, that are of interest to local shoppers and visitors to the region.

pure-nh-made-maple-syrup-maple-leaf-bottlesWhen it comes to Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure NH-made maple products, it’s not just tourists who pick up maple products at Jiffy Mart. “Local shoppers really like maple candy,” said Wanda, noting that maple candy sales are strong even in the winter, “they make great stocking stuffers.”

The packaging, including Old Man of the Mountain and Maple Leaf motif items, makes the Fuller’s Sugarhouse displays look good; and the products are fresh and high quality.  “We have a display right as people come in the door,” said Lancaster Jiffy Mart manager Connie Chaffee, “so people see it right away. From syrup to lollipops, everybody likes Fuller’s.”

Castle in the Clouds: A Must-See in the Lakes Region

CastleintheClouds

Planning a visit to New Hampshire’s Lakes Region? Set your GPS for Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough. Castle in the Clouds (also known as Lucknow) is a mountaintop estate built in 1913-1914 high in the Ossipee Mountain range. Formerly owned by millionaire Tom Plant and his wife Olive, Castle in the Clouds is an unusual example of Arts and Crafts architecture, featuring skilled hand craftsmanship in every aspect of its interior and exterior. Since it opened to the public in 1959, Castle in the Clouds has become a popular tourist attraction and venue for weddings and other gatherings.

You can take a trolley ride and learn about the history and tour the 16-room mansion, with its stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains. The Castle in the Clouds also has over 28 miles of hiking trails that are maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust.  Open from Mother’s Day weekend in May through the third Sunday in October, Castle in the Clouds hosts jazz concerts and other musical performances, yoga lessons, star-gazing, cooking classes, art exhibitions, nature presentations, and more.

Fuller pic #1Another advantage of visiting this beautiful attraction is that you can buy Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup and candy in the Castle in Clouds gift shop. Operations Director Pam Van Auken, who has been with Castle in the Clouds for the past two seasons, was familiar with Fuller’s Sugarhouse products and saw a fit between Fuller’s handcrafted products and the quality handmade products sold in the gift shop. “This year, I spearheaded an effort to feature local artisans and New Hampshire-made products, and Fuller’s Sugarhouse fits this model,” said Pam. “Working with the Fullers is great — they send me the products I need quickly. Our visitors really like their products. The maple candy has been hard to keep on the shelf!”

Put Castle in the Clouds on your must-see list!

“Shopping that feels good” is the experience that James and Susan Therriault deliver at New England Everyday Goods, a retail store located at the junction of practical, sustainable, and delightful. OK, it’s really located in Jaffrey, NH and online at newenglandeverydaygoods.com, but the Therriaults remain committed to a mission to support the New England economy while providing customers with consistently high quality products that are useful and appeal to the senses.

“Right from the start we knew we wanted maple products,” said James, “and we wanted something unique so we researched suppliers from throughout the region.” The Fuller’s Sugarhouse website resonated, with images of unique maple products and packaging, and a company history that goes back more than 40 years.

Today maple products are the top selling product line in the store. “We are more than happy to do business with Fuller’s Sugarhouse,” said James. “Their packaging is exquisite and their service is outstanding. They are passionate about maple and that is a story we like to share with our customers.”

The New England Everyday Goods store is a stone’s throw from Route 202 between the center of Jaffrey and Peterborough.  This part of New Hampshire is sometimes referred to as the “Currier and Ives” region; scenery includes fields and mountains plus myriad examples of well-maintained rural architecture, which makes New England Everyday Goods a great destination for a weekend outing — and a great place to buy Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup.

Maple is on the Menu at Mountain Fire Pizza

Todd-Mountain-Fire-PIzza
Todd Ross and the Mountain Fire Pizza oven

After working as a draftsmen for many years, Todd Ross decided it was time for a career change. With help from his wife Ellen, he started a mobile wood-fired pizza business called Mountain Fire Pizza. It started as a mobile business, with Todd and Ellen making and selling pizzas at farmer’s markets and country fairs all over northern New Hampshire. “We have always loved pizza and have been experimenting with different recipes since 1988, when we first met,” said Todd. Soon they were selling up to 120 pizzas a week. “With a mobile business, you can only operate three to four months out of the year, so we decided to open the Mountain Fire Pizza restaurant in Gorham,” said Todd.

Mountain Fire pizzas are cooked in a 750 to 1,000-degree oven heated with a hardwood fire, which adds a distinct, smoky flavor. All pizzas are made to order using the freshest ingredients available, including Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple sugar.

One of their famous specialties is the sweet and savory Maple and Bacon Pizza, made with butter, cheese, crumbled bacon and Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple sugar. “I first met the Fuller brothers during the Lancaster Fair; we were set up next to them,” said Todd. “Every day they came by to have pizza and I jokingly said that I should make a maple pizza. Dave’s eyes lit up, and right away he gave me some maple candy to make a pizza. We experimented using the candy and then finally using Fuller’s Sugarhouse maple sugar. The result was amazing!” The Maple Bacon pizza was invented and added to Mountain Fire Pizza’s menu.

Mountain Fire's Maple Bacon Pizza
Mountain Fire’s Maple Bacon Pizza

The Maple and Bacon pizza received national attention after an Associated Press reporter and his son tasted the pizza. He was so surprised that he liked it that he wrote an article titled, “Bacon, maple sugar, and butter make the perfect pizza.”

Mountain Fire Pizza was ranked #1 pizza place by Onlyinyourstate.com and #3 Best Pizza Place in the state of New Hampshire by WMUR, and has received many accolades from customers. Mountain Fire also makes a delicious cheesecake with Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup.

Todd values his great relationship with Fuller’s Sugarhouse and regularly purchases their maple sugar and syrup. Adds Todd, “The maple bacon pizza would never have happened if we hadn’t met the Fullers!

“My husband and I traveled from Massachusetts to New Hampshire over the past weekend to celebrate our anniversary. I grabbed some of your maple candy at a store because I love maple candy. I instantly fell in love with it and told my husband he had to try it. We both agreed that it was absolutely the best maple candy ever. I told him I want to go back to New Hampshire to buy more. Thank you for making the most perfect maple candy! From now on Fuller’s Sugarhouse maple candy will be the only one I will ever eat.”
