Buy Local is Jiffy Mart’s Motto

“Buy local” is part of the Jiffy Mart mission, explained Whitefield Jiffy Mart manager Wanda Ingerson. Jiffy Mart, which operates stores that sell groceries, sundries, fuel and ready-to-eat food in New Hampshire and Vermont, emphasizes both community and convenience. In addition to familiar national brands, the stores offer local products, like Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup and candy, that are of interest to local shoppers and visitors to the region.

pure-nh-made-maple-syrup-maple-leaf-bottlesWhen it comes to Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure NH-made maple products, it’s not just tourists who pick up maple products at Jiffy Mart. “Local shoppers really like maple candy,” said Wanda, noting that maple candy sales are strong even in the winter, “they make great stocking stuffers.”

The packaging, including Old Man of the Mountain and Maple Leaf motif items, makes the Fuller’s Sugarhouse displays look good; and the products are fresh and high quality.  “We have a display right as people come in the door,” said Lancaster Jiffy Mart manager Connie Chaffee, “so people see it right away. From syrup to lollipops, everybody likes Fuller’s.”

Castle in the Clouds: A Must-See in the Lakes Region

CastleintheClouds

Planning a visit to New Hampshire’s Lakes Region? Set your GPS for Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough. Castle in the Clouds (also known as Lucknow) is a mountaintop estate built in 1913-1914 high in the Ossipee Mountain range. Formerly owned by millionaire Tom Plant and his wife Olive, Castle in the Clouds is an unusual example of Arts and Crafts architecture, featuring skilled hand craftsmanship in every aspect of its interior and exterior. Since it opened to the public in 1959, Castle in the Clouds has become a popular tourist attraction and venue for weddings and other gatherings.

You can take a trolley ride and learn about the history and tour the 16-room mansion, with its stunning views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains. The Castle in the Clouds also has over 28 miles of hiking trails that are maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust.  Open from Mother’s Day weekend in May through the third Sunday in October, Castle in the Clouds hosts jazz concerts and other musical performances, yoga lessons, star-gazing, cooking classes, art exhibitions, nature presentations, and more.

Fuller pic #1Another advantage of visiting this beautiful attraction is that you can buy Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup and candy in the Castle in Clouds gift shop. Operations Director Pam Van Auken, who has been with Castle in the Clouds for the past two seasons, was familiar with Fuller’s Sugarhouse products and saw a fit between Fuller’s handcrafted products and the quality handmade products sold in the gift shop. “This year, I spearheaded an effort to feature local artisans and New Hampshire-made products, and Fuller’s Sugarhouse fits this model,” said Pam. “Working with the Fullers is great — they send me the products I need quickly. Our visitors really like their products. The maple candy has been hard to keep on the shelf!”

Put Castle in the Clouds on your must-see list!

James and Susan Therriault
James and Susan Therriault

“Shopping that feels good” is the experience that James and Susan Therriault deliver at New England Everyday Goods, a retail store located at the junction of practical, sustainable, and delightful. OK, it’s really located in Jaffrey, NH and online at newenglandeverydaygoods.com, but the Therriaults remain committed to a mission to support the New England economy while providing customers with consistently high quality products that are useful and appeal to the senses.

“Right from the start we knew we wanted maple products,” said James, “and we wanted something unique so we researched suppliers from throughout the region.” The Fuller’s Sugarhouse website resonated, with images of unique maple products and packaging, and a company history that goes back more than 40 years.

Today maple products are the top selling product line in the store. “We are more than happy to do business with Fuller’s Sugarhouse,” said James. “Their packaging is exquisite and their service is outstanding. They are passionate about maple and that is a story we like to share with our customers.”

The New England Everyday Goods store is a stone’s throw from Route 202 between the center of Jaffrey and Peterborough.  This part of New Hampshire is sometimes referred to as the “Currier and Ives” region; scenery includes fields and mountains plus myriad examples of well-maintained rural architecture, which makes New England Everyday Goods a great destination for a weekend outing — and a great place to buy Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup.

Maple is on the Menu at Mountain Fire Pizza

Todd-Mountain-Fire-PIzza
Todd Ross and the Mountain Fire Pizza oven

After working as a draftsmen for many years, Todd Ross decided it was time for a career change. With help from his wife Ellen, he started a mobile wood-fired pizza business called Mountain Fire Pizza. It started as a mobile business, with Todd and Ellen making and selling pizzas at farmer’s markets and country fairs all over northern New Hampshire. “We have always loved pizza and have been experimenting with different recipes since 1988, when we first met,” said Todd. Soon they were selling up to 120 pizzas a week. “With a mobile business, you can only operate three to four months out of the year, so we decided to open the Mountain Fire Pizza restaurant in Gorham,” said Todd.

Mountain Fire pizzas are cooked in a 750 to 1,000-degree oven heated with a hardwood fire, which adds a distinct, smoky flavor. All pizzas are made to order using the freshest ingredients available, including Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple sugar.

One of their famous specialties is the sweet and savory Maple and Bacon Pizza, made with butter, cheese, crumbled bacon and Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple sugar. “I first met the Fuller brothers during the Lancaster Fair; we were set up next to them,” said Todd. “Every day they came by to have pizza and I jokingly said that I should make a maple pizza. Dave’s eyes lit up, and right away he gave me some maple candy to make a pizza. We experimented using the candy and then finally using Fuller’s Sugarhouse maple sugar. The result was amazing!” The Maple Bacon pizza was invented and added to Mountain Fire Pizza’s menu.

The Maple and Bacon pizza received national attention after an Associated Press reporter and his son tasted the pizza. He was so surprised that he liked it that he wrote an article titled, “Bacon, maple sugar, and butter make the perfect pizza.”

Mountain Fire Pizza was ranked #1 pizza place by Onlyinyourstate.com and #3 Best Pizza Place in the state of New Hampshire by WMUR, and has received many accolades from customers. Mountain Fire also makes a delicious cheesecake with Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup.

Todd values his great relationship with Fuller’s Sugarhouse and regularly purchases their maple sugar and syrup. Adds Todd, “The maple bacon pizza would never have happened if we hadn’t met the Fullers!

April 2016

April-Newsletter-Image

Thanks to February’s mild weather, Fuller’s Sugarhouse is projected to produce 4,000 gallons of pure maple syrup. We have already surpassed last year’s production and we are not done. The cold nights and warm days are just what is needed for maple syrup production. Those were the conditions on February 3, the date of our first boil. In February alone, we produced 500 gallons and we expect to continue production until the second week in April.

The bottom line — there is more Fuller’s Sugarhouse maple syrup and maple products for our customers to enjoy!

Fun Maple Syrup Facts

  • Typical maple sugaring season is 5 weeks, from mid-March to the third week in April
  • Any type of maple tree can be used to make maple syrup. However, sugar maple trees produce sap with the highest sugar content.
  • Pure maple syrup can be stored for at least 5 years in a glass container and 2 years in a plastic container.  And if you refrigerate pure maple syrup, it will last even longer.
  • You can freeze pure maple syrup for future enjoyment. It doesn’t freeze solid and the glass container won’t break if stored in the freezer.  Frozen pure maple syrup takes 3 hours to thaw at room temperature.  You can then refreeze any syrup you don’t use.

Fuller’s Reserve Maple Syrup

Fuller’s Sugarhouse pure maple syrup is hand-crafted in small batches, and each batch has its own flavor. Dave Fuller selected one batch this year to be the 2016 Special Reserve Pure Maple Syrup, made from our first boil of the 2016 season. There are only 100 bottles of this special reserve batch. According to Ed Fuller, the maple flavor of this reserve has a back edge of vanilla and he recommends pouring it over a high quality vanilla ice cream.

Those who have tasted the Special Reserve agree:12672144_1175992859108354_8070316304664256622_o

“Fuller’s Reserve tasted over vanilla ice cream is delicious beyond description,” Lee R.

“This is amazing! We had some over ice cream last night and it’s superb!!!,” Christy M.

“I made homemade donuts this morning and dipped them in this syrup. Wow! Yummy!,” Min K.
